Apple Vision Pro Review: Is It Worth the Hype and Price?

By elago blog on May 24, 2024

The Apple Vision Pro, Apple's latest foray into mixed reality, is a device that has generated hype, or in the opinion of some, overhype since it launched in February 2024. With a hefty price tag of $3,499, it's positioned as a premium product aimed at delivering a groundbreaking experience. On launch day, here at elago we did write a comprehensive breakdown of what you get with it in our article here, but if you want to learn more now that it's been three months, keep reading. But does it live up to the expectations? After scouring numerous reviews and spending time with the device, here’s a detailed look into what the Vision Pro offers and whether it's worth your investment.

Design and Comfort

The Apple Vision Pro features a sleek, stylish design, reflecting Apple's attention to aesthetic detail. The headset comes equipped with a Solo Knit Band and a light seal cushion to ensure a comfortable fit. The setup process is straightforward: users scan their faces using the Apple Store app, which then helps determine the appropriate light seal cushion and headband size. However, despite its advanced design, some users find it cumbersome and heavy for extended use.

Display and Performance

The Vision Pro boasts dual 4K displays, delivering an impressive visual experience that envelops users in its "Environments." These environments can range from serene landscapes to dynamic cityscapes, all controlled via a Digital Crown similar to that on the Apple Watch. This feature allows users to adjust the opacity of their virtual surroundings, providing either a fully immersive or partially immersive experience. Your Tony Stark dreams of being an Iron Man don't seem too far away when you can create your own virtual world and toss of displays as you need them. In addition, it gets even more integrated if you already own say a Macbook as you can mirror and connect the displays.

Audio Experience, User Interface and Applications

Apple has integrated Spatial Audio speakers into the Vision Pro, which significantly enhance the audio experience by creating a sense of depth and directionality. However, for those seeking deep bass or using the headset in shared spaces, connecting compatible headphones, such as AirPods or AirPods Max, is recommended. The Vision Pro runs on visionOS, leveraging Apple's ecosystem to provide seamless integration with iPhones, iPads, and Macs. The device uses eye-tracking and hand gestures for navigation, which users find intuitive and responsive. One standout feature is the ability to view "spatial videos" and photos, which are recorded in 3D to provide a more immersive viewing experience. This feature allows users to relive moments with an unprecedented sense of presence and realism.

Limitations

Despite its sleek design, the Vision Pro can be cumbersome and heavy, which may deter users from wearing it for extended periods . In addition, the fully charged battery life is only at maximum 3 hours.  In addition, there is limited third-party app support. As a new product, the Vision Pro currently has limited third-party app support, which could affect its utility until more developers create applications optimized for the platform . This leads us into the final con - if you're not integrated into the Apple ecosystem this might not be the headset for you. To fully utilize the Vision Pro’s features, users need to be deeply integrated into the Apple ecosystem, which may not be ideal for those who use a mix of different platforms and devices .
